A Viral Accusation and Swift Retraction

The incident began when Franco, training in Sosua, Puerto Plata, took to his official Instagram account on September 9, 2025, to accuse the Hotel Hispaniola Beach of stealing one million Dominican pesos (approximately $17,000 USD) from his room. In a video that rapidly garnered over 50,000 views in less than 12 hours, Franco passionately demanded justice.

“Let’s attack the owner of Hispaniola Beach in Sosua… They steal a million pesos from me. They were harassing me for days,” Franco declared, emphasizing the “unacceptable situation.” He even called for support from his followers and the National Police, amplifying the public outcry.

However, the narrative took a sharp turn the following day. Teodicio Jaquez, Franco’s lawyer, publicly denied the theft claim. “The money was recovered in the same hotel room. It was just a misunderstanding,” Jaquez explained, offering a formal apology to the hotel management. The hotel, for its part, confirmed it had received no official report or police visit prior to the video’s viral spread.

A Reputation Under Siege

This latest episode further erodes the credibility of Wander Franco, whose career has been overshadowed by significant legal troubles. The incident occurred while the 24-year-old shortstop remains suspended indefinitely from Major League Baseball.

In June 2025, Franco was found guilty of sexual abuse against a minor in Puerto Plata, resulting in a two-year suspended prison sentence. These charges followed previous accusations of sexual exploitation in 2023, which initially led to his suspension by MLB and a comprehensive investigation.

This isn’t the first time Franco has reported a theft. In 2022, he was genuinely victimized in the United States when a man broke into his luxury vehicle, making off with over $650,000 in jewelry. While that incident was confirmed, the recent false alarm in the Dominican Republic raises questions about his judgment and the ongoing challenges he faces off the field.

The Road Ahead for the Tampa Bay Rays Star

The repeated controversies surrounding Franco pose a significant challenge for the Tampa Bay Rays and Major League Baseball. Once hailed as a generational talent, his career has been derailed by a series of events that extend far beyond the baseball diamond. As he navigates a two-year suspended sentence and an uncertain future in professional baseball, each new incident further complicates his path to potential redemption.

The baseball world continues to watch closely as the legal and personal sagas of Wander Franco unfold, wondering if he will ever return to the game that once promised him superstardom.
